Message Setting a booby trap to protect property is illegal in all states. Little story here:

Florida, mid-90's! A guy owned a small grocery store. Kept getting broken into and the thieves always came in the same way. Skylight in the roof. He tried everything - even putting bars over it. Still they managed to get in. He came up with the idea to booby trap the store. He took a metal grate, skinned wire from an power cord, connected a 220/240 volt AC plug to one end and wrapped either one or both bare ends (can't remember the detail) around the grate. Plugged it in and to add insult to injury had placed it in a puddle of water . All of this directly under the entry point the thieves had been using. I think it took a couple of weeks but one morning when he opened the store he had his culprit. As I remember the burgular was alive but not in good condition. The store owner....he was arrested! And...although the police and prosecutors sympathized with his plight. It was still against the law.

That story was featured on NBC (or ABC) evening news when I saw it. I think it may have been in the Miami area - not sure, but it definitely was Florida. Sometimes I get into discussions here at work and maybe bring it up. People, upon hearing that, just shake their heads.
